WHAT WE DO

Ten officers across Virginia lost their lives in the line of duty in 2006. This is the reason that VPSF exists – to help the families of fallen public safety officers killed in the line of duty. Our mission is focused on:

  • Providing immediate financial assistance to the families of public safety officers killed or severely injured in the line of duty.
  • Coordinating pro bono legal services and grief counseling to families.
  • Providing education assistance to the eligible spouse or dependent children of a slain officer.
  • Honoring public safety officers by administering the Commonwealth Public Safety Medal of Valor Awards program - the highest honor for heroism bestowed in Virginia.

Financial aid:

Silver Star Line of Duty Death Benefit: VPSF provides $2,000 to the surviving spouse or dependent of a public safety officer killed in the line of duty.

Silver Star Severely Injured Benefit: An immediate payment of $500.00 to any public safety officer severely injured in the line of duty. Click here for more information.

Education Assistance:

VPSF awards up to $3,000 per academic year for the eligible spouse or dependent children of slain public safety officers. Each case is evaluated by the Board on an individual basis. To download an application click here – or contact us.

Governor’s Medal of Valor - Commonwealth Public Safety Medal of Valor Awards:

VPSF is the proud administrator of the highest award for heroism awarded in Virginia: the Commonwealth Public Safety Medal of Valor award program – commonly known as the Governor’s Medal of Valor. Awarded annually, nominations are solicited from over 1,400 public safety agencies across the state.
